| MDU Resources Group, Inc. operates as a natural resource company in the United States. The company operates in six segments: Electric, Natural Gas and Oil Production, Construction Services, Pipeline and Energy Services, Construction Materials and Contracting, and Other. The Electric segment generates, transmits, and distributes electricity in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. As of December 31, 2008, it provided electric services to approximately 121,000 residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers. The Natural Gas and Oil production segment engages in natural gas and oil acquisition, exploration, development, and production activities in the Rocky Mountain and Mid-Continent regions of the United States and in and around the Gulf of Mexico. As of the above date, the company sold natural gas to approximately 822,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers. The Construction Services segment engages in constructing and maintaining electric and communication lines, gas pipelines, fire protection systems, external lighting, and traffic signalization equipment. It also provides inside electrical wiring, cabling, mechanical services, as well as sells and distributes electrical materials, and manufactures and distributes specialty equipment. The Pipeline and Energy Services segment provides natural gas transportation, underground storage, and gathering services through pipeline systems in the Rocky Mountain and northern Great Plains regions. The Construction Materials and Contracting segment engages in the mining, processing, and sale of construction aggregates, including crushed stone, sand, and gravel; production and sale of asphalt mix, and the of supply liquid asphalt; and supply of ready-mixed concrete for construction activities. The Other segment insures various types of risks as a captive insurer through its subsidiary, Centennial Holdings Capital LLC. The company was founded in 1924 and is based in Bismarck, North Dakota. |
