| Loews Corporation operates as a diversified holding company in the United States. The companys subsidiary, CNA Financial Corporation (CNA), acts as a commercial property and casualty insurance organization that provides insurance protection to businesses, associations, professionals, and groups. CNAs insurance products include standard commercial lines, specialty lines, surety, marine, warranty, and life and group products. Loews Corporations subsidiary, Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc., owns and operates drilling rigs that are used in the drilling of offshore oil and gas wells on a contract basis for companies engaged in exploration and production of hydrocarbons. As of December 31, 2008, it owned and operated a fleet of offshore drilling rigs consisting of 30 semisubmersibles, 14 jack-up units, and 1 drill ship. The companys subsidiary, HighMount Exploration & Production LLC, engages in the exploration, production, and marketing of natural gas, natural gas liquids, and oil. HighMount's assets are located in the Permian Basin in Texas, the Antrim Shale in Michigan, and the Black Warrior Basin in Alabama, and have net proved reserves totaling approximately 2.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas equivalent. Loews Corporations subsidiary, Boardwalk Pipeline Partners, LP, engages in the interstate transportation and storage of natural gas. Boardwalk's system has approximately 14,000 miles of pipeline, carrying an average of 4.8 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of gas per day, and underground storage fields with aggregate working gas capacity of approximately 160 Bcf. Additionally, the companys subsidiary, Loews Hotels, operates 18 hotels located in cities throughout the United States and Canada. The company was founded in 1954 and is headquartered in New York, New York. |
